One thing I love about Boyce is her energy. When she supports something, she’s all in. I love this woman more than chocolate! Not to mention I can vouch for Lichgates being one helluva a read for a kid to get their hands on for free. It’s epic fantasy with a contemporary flair that anyone of any age can love, no matter what genres they usually prefer. Lichgates is a book to get lost in. So I am very very excited, and I encourage anyone reading this post to make sure they get their own copy. You will not be disappointed!
Boyce also has a few words to share with any kids out there who might be experiencing bullying.

When I look back on high school, I cringe. I hated it. I had a hell of a time, but I survived…and that’s what matters.
I can’t tell you how terrifying it is to hear that kids commit suicide because they’re bullied. I know bullies are scum, but suicide really is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
You always hear people say it gets better when you get into the real world, and that’s because it’s true. Things do get better. People change. They grow up a little. And those who don’t…well, you learn pretty quickly that they don’t matter.
Point is, keep your chin up. Hang in there. Insert cliché number three. You’ll be out, soon. In the meantime, I hope the Grimoire Trilogy helps you escape a little. Once you graduate, you’ll get a real chance to show the world what a spectacular person you are.

If you’re reading this, I can guess two things that are probably true: One, you have a smile on your face, because Boyce has that effect on everyone. And two, you are dying to know what Lichgates is all about! Well, let’s not delay any longer. Here’s a little bit about the book:
The Grimoire turns its own pages and can answer any question asked of it, and Kara Magari is its next target.
Kara has no idea what she’s getting herself into when she stumbles across the old book while hiking a hidden trail. Once she opens it, she’s thrown into Ourea: a beautiful world full of terrifying things that want the Grimoire’s secrets. Lichgates is a great book for this campaign!
I agree! Think of what Braeden does through with his father Carden, who is a bully to his son, his own kingdom, and all the other kingdoms of Ourea! And yet look at how amazing of a person Braeden has become! I am sure everyone who reads that book will love him, which goes to show that even though it may not feel like it when you are the one being bullied, the truth is that people in general will cheer you on if you are a good person, and if you are a bully people will see you for the villain you are.
You go girls.
True words, Boyce. I think this is a perfect book for this campaign. I had a hell of a time, mostly in middle school, and that’s one of the reasons I loved fantasy books. I could escape. No matter how much life sucked, I could go live in another world for a while. I hope the fantastic world of Lichgates becomes that escape for another teen.

I, too, was bullied in middle school. It was hell and affected my self-esteem for a long time. When I read the sad stories in the news of kids killing themselves because of being tormented by bullies, I wonder when it will ever end? I believe that it won’t get better until people start equating bullying with abuse, which is exactly what it is.
Yes, EXACTLY. Bullying IS abuse, whether it’s verbal or physical, and it’s just like bullies to try to say it’s not. Bullies are by nature manipulative, so like other abusers, they try to convince the victim (and others) that everything happening is the victim’s fault. NOT OK!
