Hey gang! Rebecca asked that I drop in to talk a bit about developing the world in my debut series, the Grimoire Trilogy. I’ll keep it short—promise!
The Grimoire Trilogy is a YA epic fantasy about a hidden world parallel to ours and accessible via portals called lichgates. Suffice to say, Ourea is a complex place. I should hope so, too; I’ve been building it since 2006.(aha! I get book one’s title!).
It has never-before-seen races, shape shifters, magic, unimaginable creatures, and a terrifying political subplot. Kings can mentally control their subjects. There are castles on clouds and cities submerged beneath the water. A race I created called isen steal souls to remain immortal. Eternally young shape shifters called muses protect and govern this hidden world even though they’re thought to be myth. It goes on.
Ourea is based on Earth because, well, it is Earth…the part we forgot. I wanted to help readers rediscover the beauty of our world by letting them see it in a new light through Ourea. Most of the landscapes were inspired by real places, like Angel Falls in Venezuela and the Rocky Mountains. Other bits, like the floating city and miles-high rose-covered cliff range, are…um, slightly fabricated.
